Heliophora Dakhla: The History and Philosophy of Rachid Roussafi

There are places that do more than just accommodate you; they transform you. Located 80 kilometers from the hustle and bustle of the city, where the golden dunes of the Sahara stretch to embrace the ocean, the Heliophora Dakhla Riders Camp is one of them. Behind this sanctuary dedicated to nature and watersports lovers lies a life philosophy, that of its founder: Rachid Roussafi. A pioneer of kitesurfing and windsurfing in Dakhla since 2001, this former world circuit competitor traded the adrenaline of championships for the quest of perfect harmony between man, wind, and desert. Here is the story of a vision, the words of a passionate soul who gave birth to the Heliophora experience.

The Quest for the Secret Spot: From World Oceans to the Shores of Dakhla

To understand the essence of Heliophora, we must look at its creator's roots. Having spent much of his life traveling the globe on the professional circuit, Rachid Roussafi was always driven by a singular quest: finding the "magic spot". Since the late 80s, he explored the Moroccan coasts and discovered Dakhla. "I was looking for the secret spot, the perfect place where it wouldn't be crowded on the water," he confides. The idea of building a camp wasn't immediate; it matured with the wind, over the years. Being a pioneer on a spot offers a rare privilege: choosing the best location. A place free of obstacles, safe, protected from gusts by the natural relief, offering unforgettable sunsets. This is exactly what Heliophora offers today.

Humanity First: More Than Just a Room Number

As Dakhla gained popularity since 2014, large structures multiplied on the peninsula. Rachid made a radically different choice, dictated by his heart. "I wanted to limit it to about fifty people. I like to remember every single guest. With us, a person is not a number or a room key. Every person matters." This desire for intimacy is the central pillar of the Riders Camp. The goal is not the industrialization of tourism, but the sharing of a common passion. The team takes the time to connect, ride with visitors, and forge authentic bonds so that every stay leaves a lasting impression.

The Luxury of Isolation and Eco-Construction

Moving 80 kilometers away from the city is a daily logistical challenge, but it is the price to pay to offer what Rachid calls "the comfort and luxury of being in an isolated place". This respect for isolation comes with a deep respect for nature. Heliophora was designed to blend silently into its environment:

  • Local and traditional materials: The architecture is inspired by the Amazigh (Berber) heritage with earth and stone walls.
  • Natural comfort: These ancestral building techniques provide exceptional thermal and acoustic insulation.
  • Minimal footprint: Rachid's watchword is discretion: "To be as discreet as possible on the spot, as eco-friendly as possible, working with nature and not against it."

Moroccan Gastronomy at the Heart of Sharing

What would Moroccan warmth be without its gastronomy? The camp makes it a point of honor to offer high-quality dining with traditional dishes. Listening is paramount: menus adapt to everyone's desires (vegetarian, gluten-free), proving that the Heliophora table is designed to bring people together.

A Sanctuary for All: Riders, Families, and Peaceful Souls

While Heliophora is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts, it is also a haven of peace for a wider audience. The protected environment welcomes families (children safely explore the shallow pools) and non-riding companions seeking tranquility (yoga facing the ocean, bird watching).

Heliophora Dakhla is not just a kitesurf camp. It is the result of a love for the ocean and respect for the desert. It is Rachid Roussafi's promise: to offer you a space where time stands still.
